From 1st July 2017, Gordon Macdonald Pty Ltd will be introducing Card Surcharges for payments on debit and credit cards.

When will Card Surcharges apply?

Any payment or purchase using a credit or debit card will incur a Card Surcharge. The Card Surcharge is to partly recover costs associated with using credit or debit cards, including bank and card provider merchant fees.

Payments made via bank transfer, cash or EFTPOS (cheque or savings accounts) will not attract a Card Surcharge.

How much are the Card Surcharges?

From 1st July 2017, any payments using Visa or Mastercard as ‘tap-and-go’ or ‘Credit’ transactions will incur a 1.25% Card Surcharge^. Payments using American Express cards as ‘tap-and-go’ or ‘Credit’ transactions will incur a 2.5% Card Surcharge^.

How are Card Surcharges calculated?

The Card Surcharge is added to the amount due on an invoice. For account balance payments, the Card Surcharge be added to the amount being settled. If you are an Eligible Customer for a Settlement Discount, a Card Surcharge is added after any Settlement Discount is calculated.

What if I return my items and they are eligible for a refund?

The Card Surcharge is to partly recover costs associated with using credit or debit cards. We will refund the value of your items purchased and not apply any additional Card Surcharge. Even if your goods are refunded, Gordon Macdonald Electrical still has incurred the merchant and other fees for your purchase which are not refunded to us.

Worked Examples

  • You need to pay an invoice of $100.00 using a Visa card. A Card Surcharge of 1.25% x $100 = $1.25 is added to the total payment being made, being a total of $101.25
  • You want to pay $500 off your account balance using an American Express card. If you are an Eligible Customer for a Settlement Discount, the amount owing is $500 x 98.5% = $492.50. Then add a Card Surcharge amount of 2.5% x $492.50 = $12.31, bringing a total payment of $504.81.
  • You are eligible for a refund on goods worth $50.00 which were purchased on Mastercard. The Card Surcharge paid to purchase the goods on Mastercard is not eligible for refund, and we will refund the $50.00 back to the original card.
